About the comunity

The German-Ukrainian Rhine-Neckar Society was founded in December 1992 by Dr. Ernst Lüdemann, a philologist and specialist in the history of Eastern Europe. Its activities were based on an initiative group that had already been working in Heidelberg, providing humanitarian aid to those affected by the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster.

During the 1990s, the society actively invited groups of children from the Chernobyl region and Kyiv to spend holidays in our region, collected donations for those affected in Ukraine, and organized the transportation of material aid in support of humanitarian projects.

Today, the society brings together Ukrainian and German members from the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate. It has become an important point of contact for newly arrived Ukrainians in the region, particularly for young families and students. Since November 2013, the society has been headed by Ms. Maria Melnyk, a Ukrainian member of the German diaspora, who was also the founder and first director of the Ukrainian Saturday school “Nasha Shkola” until 2018.

Activities of the Association

Since its founding in 1992, the scope of the association's activities has expanded significantly to include new priorities:

Educational work and preservation of traditions:

Ukrainian Saturday School “Nasha Shkola”: Opened by the association in October 2009 in Heidelberg:

The school offers Ukrainian language lessons for children and young people aged 4 to 16, as well as teaching regional studies, history, literature, customs, and culture. As of 2020, around 60 children attend the school.

Event formats:

The association regularly organizes lectures, exhibitions, panel discussions on Ukrainian history, culture, and other relevant topics, as well as master classes.

Cooperation:

We actively cooperate with municipal institutions in Heidelberg, such as the Council for Foreigners and Migrants, the International Center, and the International Parents' Association of Heidelberg. We also cooperate with the International Building Order (Bauorden) and the Children's Aid Society of Ukraine (Kinderhilfe Ukraine für Novograd-Volynskyj e.V., Ludwigshafen). We are participants in the International Center's Allianz der Vielfalt project.

Participation in city events and projects:

The association actively participates in city initiatives such as “Allianz der Vielfalt,” “Bildungslotse,” International Week Against Racism, International Holidays, and others.

Projects:

  • Center for Displaced Persons and Refugees “Help Dnipro”: Located in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine, this center has been receiving material and financial support from our association since 2014, since the beginning of the full-scale war in eastern Ukraine.
  • Collecting donations and providing humanitarian aid to those in need in Ukraine.
  • Initiatives of Association's Members

Our members are also actively developing their own initiatives:

Several years ago, our folk dance group “Malvy” was formed, which preserves and promotes Ukrainian folk dance.
In early 2019, parents of the Ukrainian Saturday school devoted themselves to sports and founded a soccer team.
Important Events

Our society was a founding member at the constituent assembly of the “Association of Ukrainian Organizations in Germany,” which took place in October 2012 in Berlin.
